eBay • For Your Consideration: • A (RARE) First Edition, First Printing in HARDCOVER: • “THE MYSTIC ADVENTURES OF ROXIE STONER” (Houghton Mifflin, 1974) (Hardcover, First Edition, First Printing) • BY BERRY MORGAN • ABOUT THIS TITLE: • “Through a unique use of language and extraordinary insight, BERRY MORGAN [of Port Gibson, Mississippi] succeeds in illuminating the small world of an old, near saintly colored woman (the word ‘black’ has not entered ROXIE’s vocabulary) and in making that world fascinating and significant. It is ROXIE herself who narrates her story, telling it in her own way with a bland of gravity, wonderment, and humor…. [BERRY MORGAN’s] tales of the wondrous ROXIE STONER have been appearing in THE NEW YORKER for several years, where they have attracted a large and admiring audience. All of the ROXIE stories (Including one never before published) are now presented here in their proper novelistic sequence, progressing in time through the years of ROXIE’s life in King County, Mississippi.” —THE PUBLISHER • “EDITH [PEARLMAN] told me that MORGAN’s story ‘The Hill,’ published in 1973 in THE NEW YORKER, was among the best stories she’d ever read, but that for some reason no one to whom she mentioned it could remember ever having read it. The story was not even given a mention by the anthologies in the year following its publication, and although it was later included in MORGAN’s collection, THE MYSTIC ADVENTURES OF ROXIE STONER, it has never, to my knowledge, been reprinted. MORGAN’s first book, a novel called PURSUIT, was released in 1966. Writing for the NEW YORK TIMES, JOYCE CAROL OATES, author at the time of the astonishingly low number of three books, said that MORGAN produced ‘an exotic marriage of FAULKNER and FLANNERY O’CONNOR,’ with a ‘distinctive touch’ and an ‘irresistible drama,’ right down to the ‘very look and smell of the old plantation.’ But somehow, eight years later, a writer who had merited not one but two reviews in the NEW YORK TIMES for her debut novel didn’t nab a single write-up in that newspaper for her short-story collection about ROXIE STONER. However, MICHAEL WOOD (now the chair of Princeton’s English Department, then a professor at Columbia), writing in the NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS, rated MORGAN better than the contemporarily modish MURIEL SPARK and EVAN S. CONNELL JR., the other two writers considered in his review. In discussing the eponymous ROXIE, he even went so far as to invoke characters created by DICKENS and DOSTOYEVSKY. MORGAN, he said, offered us not ‘facts or outlines or diagnoses of life’ but ‘the feel of life’; she ‘tells us things we don’t know.’ Don’t you like to be told things you don’t know? Satisfying that curiosity is one of the reasons I read. So how does a writer such as BERRY MORGAN vanish? Fame: what a bitch! Well, it requires every kind of excess, as DON DELILLO reminded us. Maybe that wasn’t MORGAN’s style.” —BEN GEORGE, ECOTONE (2010) • “BERRY MORGAN’s stories about ROXIE STONER are NEW YORKER stories–gems…. MORGAN is a careful and…she doesn’t patronize ROXIE and she doesn’t glorify her…. There is a real achievement in these stories….” —ROGER SALE, THE SEWANEE REVIEW (1975) • “Her first novel, PURSUIT, was published in 1966 and earned her the Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship, given to new authors who show potential. She also began publishing short stories in THE NEW YORKER, a practice she continued until 1988. THE MYSTIC ADVENTURES OF ROXIE STONER (1974), a collection of sixteen short stories, earned Morgan another Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship. Her third novel, THE MISSISSIPPIAN, was never completed…. After her divorce in 1972 Morgan became a creative writing instructor at Northeast Louisiana University (now University of Louisiana at Monroe) and several schools in Washington, D.C. She also worked as a farmer, secretary, and real estate specialist, and she was active in the Mississippi civil rights movement.” —MISSISSIPPI ENCYCLOPEDIA • “In addition to her fiction writing, BERRY MORGAN was active in the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi in the 1960s. She worked in numerous occupations including an executive secretary; a real estate specialist; a free-lance editor; plantation manager in Mississippi; a creative writing instructor at Northeast Louisiana University, Catholic University of America, George Washington University, and the American University; and a cattle farmer in West Virginia. She was involved in organic farming. Although a member of the Catholic faith, she identified herself as a Christian Existentialist. Her unified world view is said to have given her fiction its uniqueness and universality.” —MISSISSIPPI WRITERS & MUSICIANS (WEBSITE) • ABOUT THE AUTHOR’S FIRST BOOK, “PURSUIT”: • “The book is remarkable for the close, shuttered atmosphere which confines these lives and to a great extent defines the character of the book—difficult to escape both in its immediate and more far-reaching effectiveness.” —KIRKUS REVIEWS • “Easily one of the best novels to appear in a year already distinguished by much good fiction.” —CHICAGO DAILY NEWS • “A remarkable performance. Everything is believable…. There is no gothic excess, no heavy symbolism, and the prose is direct, straightforward, and precise.” —CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER • “An exotic marriage of FAULKNER and FLANNERY O’CONNOR…. Distinctive…iressistible.” —JOYCE CAROL OATES, NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW • “The most exciting novel to come out of the South since the death of FLANNERY O’CONNOR. As a first novel, it must surely be ranked with such publishing events as O’CONNOR’s WISE BLOOD and CARSON McCULLERS’s THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER.” —WALKER PERCY • • For other details about this book, please see below. • TITLE: “THE MYSTIC ADVENTURES OF ROXIE STONER” AUTHOR: BERRY MORGAN TYPE: HARDCOVER PUBLISHER, LOCALE, & YEAR: Houghton Mifflin Company (Boston), 1974 EDITION: First Edition, First Printing* *RE: On the Copyright Page, the statement “First Printing.” NOTE: This copy is NOT ex-library NOR a book-club edition.
